Dami: What was your first introduction to hip hop?
Jordan Mac: My first introduction to hip hop was around 8 years old from my older brother and his friends. One of the only CDs I had was “The Eminem Show”. I would listen to it all the time and felt so inspired to write my first rap. I went to school and rapped it on the bus when one of the other kids said he rapped too. They thought it was really good and were surprised that it came from me as I was kinda shy but found a radical confident voice when I rap.
Dami: Who are your biggest inspirations?
Jordan Mac: Kid Cudi, Mac Miller, J Cole, Eminem, 2PAC, Juice WRLD, Outkast. I listen to all kinds of music but Kid Cudi definitely spoke to me the most especially after my father passed away as we have that in common.
Dami: What’s your creative process like?
Jordan Mac: My creative process varies. Inspiration could hit me at any time but lately I’ve been freestyling more and combining it with writing. For “Godspeed”, I tried something different and I actually didn’t write down a single word before saying it. I pulled up the beat and just recorded every line as they came to me. I freestyled half of the first verse in one take and just kept rolling with it. I try to challenge myself and take different approaches but as long as I’m in tune and vibing with it, I’m not really caring who hears it knowing if it’s what I wanna hear someone else who relates will too. I wrote raps to free my mind and cure my mental health for a long time without anyone knowing so I figure maybe now I could help other people too.
Dami: How would you describe your sound? Jordan Mac: My sound is a combination of all of my influences inevitably. However, I feel like when I find my inner voice calling it’s distinctly different. I’m still working on figuring out what my niche is, but honestly the more different my sound is the better. There’s already thousands trying to imitate Lil Baby. I’m gonna be Jordan Mac better than anyone else can.
Dami: What’s next for you after “Godspeed?”
Jordan Mac: My next song “Holding On” comes out December 3rd. I’m really excited about this one and I’m working on more singles while putting together my debut album.
Dami: Any time stamp for when that’s gonna come out?
Jordan Mac: Not yet but I’m shooting for the beginning of 2022.
Dami: What’s the most challenging part of being an artist?
Jordan Mac: The most challenging part of being an artist for me is fully capturing an idea or emotion and transcending it into reality as vivid as it appears in my imagination. I’m hard on myself for wanting to get it exactly the same but sometimes it comes out a little different and is still cool.
Dami: Any dream collabs?
Jordan Mac: My dream collabs would be Kid Cudi, Big Sean, J Cole, ScHoolboy Q (anyone from TDE), Vic Mensa, Cordae, Joyner Lucas, Kanye, Marc E Bassy, Miguel and Thundercat.
Dami: You have a track dropping December. What should we expect from it? Is it gonna be like “Godspeed” or gonna be way different?
Jordan Mac: It’s very different. It doesn’t really sound like any of my other songs honestly but is one of my favorites. I’m excited for people to hear this side of me.
