KIM JOKE

Dami: What was your first introduction to hip hop?

Kim Joke: That’s actually a tough one. I was just a part of it growing up. I don’t really have a story, it’s just what the people around me shared a love for. Great Adventures of Slick Rick made the first impression on me that really grabbed me and provoked me to want to be a rapper.

Dami: Who inspired you to start rapping?

Kim Joke: NWA and Slick Rick.

Dami: What’s your creative process like?

Kim Joke: It’s constant. I pick a beat that makes me feel a certain way and I want to explain that to people. Most of my music is explaining what the beat makes me feel like. Then I write it and perform it over and over to get the bounce I like and share it with people to see if they feel it. I believe that music is about sharing an experience and isolating feels weird to me so I get it out there early on.

Dami: How would you describe your sound?

Kim Joke: I try for a good blend between the old school and new shit. When I do familiar cadences or emphasis, I’m very aware of it and it’s my way to show respect. My beats from the future though lol.

Dami: Is there anything you take inspiration from when making music?

Kim Joke: Yeah of course. It’s more like the inspiration drives me. I’ll get a certain thing I’m going through and file it away in my weird brain, then a beat will show up and I’ll be like ‘here we go’.

Dami: Are there any more collaborations between you and Tac0o?

Kim Joke: Man I hope. I’m a big fan of his music so it’s usually me asking him for a feature honestly. Shout out Tac0o. But yeah, it’ll probably happen soon.

Dami: What should we expect from your upcoming project?

Kim Joke: It’s different I don’t even know what to expect. It’s weird though and this happens a lot. I have heard other artists on a similar vibe so we’ll see. I feel like producers drive the sound a lot. I just write and perform to it so PLAN&TBUBU is really the dominant force of this project.

Dami: What are you hoping to achieve before the end of this year?

Kim Joke: I wanna release the project in January so I’d like to finish this project before the end of this year. I wanna kick off 2022 with a project release.

Dami: What would you say is your biggest challenge as an artist?

Kim Joke: I’m happy right now creating. I’m content with my resources. I have things that bug me though haha but I don’t really have much of a challenge.
