RICH THE CHAMPS

ree

Grey: How would you describe your style of music?

Rich The Champ: I’d explain it as soulful and old school but without completely relying on that sound as I try to infuse as much new school style and even other genres such as jazz and funk and I really just try my best to do what I feel is the best possible sound for me at that time

Grey: Who are your biggest musical influences?

Rich The Champ: Kanye West and Isaiah Rashad without a doubt. I fell in love with how Ye makes his sound perfectly fit his psyche and sound so cinematic yet still playful and I can’t help but incorporate that into my music. Isaiah is a newer influence for me but the chill, lazy and laid back psychedelic flow is such an interesting thing to me and I’ve definitely incorporated it a ton into my new project

Grey: Speaking about your new project, tell us more about it. What should listeners expect from it?

Rich The Champ: I’ve always had the opinion that if your fans can’t differentiate your work based on the sound, you’re doing something wrong. So going off that, I’ve tried to keep a little bit of the soul sound off my EP but expand upon that with grand production and as I said earlier, completely switch my style up and come with a lazy psychedelic flow over some jazzy production and even have some crazy synth work at the end of the album from Nostalgia55

Grey: What got you into music?

Rich The Champ: Ever since a little kid when I was with my mom listening to punk music, I’ve always just had that love for the way music made me feel. Eventually when I was around 12, I just started to write songs and especially when quarantine started I decided to pick up producing and ever since then I’ve decided to take it serious

Grey: Describe your creative process

Rich The Champ: I’m very indecisive about my music. I’ve been working on this album for about 9 months and have changed the entire thing multiple times. I’d say the stages of me creating a body of work is deciding the sound that I’m going for then I’ll get what I call first cut beats on and set in a tracklist. I’ll then write my album and then start recording and finishing songs until I get something I don’t like. I’ll then rework that song or completely change it until I end up with my final tracklist and then find some visuals that will fit the album

Grey: Any dream collabs?

Rich The Champ: Kanye West, Joey Bada$$ and Kendrick obviously but to be realistic there’s this guy named Floyd. He’s a real underground dude but he’s one of the realest hip hop guys I’ve ever seen and I feel like we could mesh together very well with our styles. He has crazy delivery and has an ear for beats. The dude’s just insane overall but definitely my dream guy to collab with at the moment

Grey: Have you ever been discouraged from making music and what did you do to keep your head in check?

Rich The Champ: The only thing that discouraged me was overworking myself. I have only ever done this for me and myself only and I do what I believe will make me happy and sounds good but over time, gaining a small following has made me nervous about what I put out because I have a crowd to please and I want to make the people around me happy but I know ultimately I control how I feel about my music and that’s the most important thing to remember

Grey: What you tryna achieve at the end of this year?

Rich The Champ: I want to be established in the underground as a talented artist, producer and just a creative person overall. I want to get more producing work done as I feel that’s a very underrated part of my craft but most importantly, I would like for people to hear my first album this summer and be impressed and ready for whatever is to come in the coming years
